Alice In Wonderland (1903)
The first ever movie made based on Lewis Carrolls books was made in 1903 and starred May Clark as Alice.
Directed by Cecil M Hepworth and Percy Stow, the silent treasure was famed for it's special effects which were cutting edge at the time. Unfortunately time isn't kind to old film (a lot of films from the past have been lost due to fire and exposure) and a chunk of the only known original copy is lost.
I find it particularly interesting that the actors and even crew take on various jobs in the making of the film. For example Cecil M Hepworth acted, produced and filmed the production. He also got his wife involved! It's unusual nowadays for an actor in a movie to take on more than one role without a reason but here Mrs Hepworth plays the white rabbit and the Queen of Hearts.
Luckily for us what was left of the film was saved and restored so we can enjoy it. All 8 minutes!
I also found a version with commentary
